Wow, the scene backstage at Rodarte was a show all to itself. The hair, makeup and nails were so elaborate they had to bring in extra trailers for more beauty work space. Since we live in a paparazzi world models were moved in between the two locations with black sheets over them so the exclusive makeup look wouldn't be released to the press before the first look went down the runway.
The overall look was a mix between street girls and Maori culture (Indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand), which you see through the Maori-inspired geometric tattoo makeup which evokes the feeling of a futuristic tribe. These tattoos were exclusive designed by MAC Cosmetic Senior Artist Chantel Miller and took four weeks to create with 4 different full-sleeve designs, 1 neck design and 8 half-sleeves. The morning of the show, each model received a customized combination depending on what fashion look she would be wearing.
The idea for the tattoos stemmed from Rodarte designers Kate and Laura's desire to celebrate makeup as art not only for the face, but also for the body in a similar way that Indian culture uses Henna. They want a woman to look at makeup as an accessory for an outfit the way you would a bracelet or a necklace.
